ISO Standards · Occupational health & safety

ISO 45001 health and safety management built around real work.

ISO 45001:2018 remains the current published occupational health and safety (OH&S) management-system standard.

A revised edition is under development. ISO/DIS 45001 is at Draft International Standard stage and is expected to replace ISO 45001:2018 once the revision is published.

What ISO 45001 addresses

A functioning OH&S management system should manage:

  • Hazards and OH&S risks
  • Legal and other requirements
  • Worker consultation and participation
  • Leadership and accountability
  • Competence
  • Operational controls
  • Contractors and procurement
  • Emergency preparedness
  • Incidents
  • Monitoring and improvement
Edition and transition

Revision approach

Do not implement draft requirements as though they are final. Instead:

  1. Monitor the final publication.
  2. Identify likely change areas.
  3. Avoid creating avoidable rework.
  4. Confirm transition requirements once formally established.
Deliverables

What you receive

Depending on scope:

  • OH&S scope
  • Hazard and risk framework
  • Requirement register
  • Worker-participation mechanisms
  • Operational-control framework
  • Objectives
  • Evidence register
  • Internal-audit plan
  • Management-review inputs
  • Revision-readiness actions where applicable
Evidence

Evidence expectations

Participation and control should be visible in records, not only in procedures. For example:

How the work happens

Implementation follows the same evidence-first sequence, scaled to your scope, maturity and existing systems.

  3. Implement
  4. Prove
  5. Assure
